Drop on Heel
Prerequisites:  Basic & Advanced Obedience, Down
NOTE:  Do NOT attempt this exercise until you have been instructed in the 'Down' command
and have practiced the down command for a minimum of 3 weeks.

1.  Heel and sit your dog several times to warm up.

2.  Give the dog a 'heel' and move forward.  As you come to a stop, give the 'down' command.  If the dog doesn't drop
to the ground, give the down correction.

3.  DO NOT give a 'sit' command before the 'down' command.  However, if the dog chooses to sit first, that is fine, just
be sure it's flowing directly into the down command.

4.  Repeat the above steps 10 times.  If you have to correct, that repetition doesn't count.

Drop on Recall
Prerequisites:  Basic & Advanced Obedience, Recall, Down
NOTE:  Do NOT attempt this exercise until you have been instructed in the 'Down' command
and have practiced the down command for a minimum of 2 weeks. Additionally, your dog must be at least 80%
responsive on the Recall - even with distractions.

1.  Put the dog in a sit & wait.

2.  Move 6 to 50 feet away from the dog.  (Start close and move out as the dog gets better at the command).

3.  Call the dog.

4.  As the dog is moving toward you, give the 'down' command.

5.  If the dog doesn't stop and down, go quickly to it and administer the down correction.  Once the dog is down, move
back away from it and call it again.

6.   On the second recall, allow your dog to come all the way to you.

7.  Repeat the above steps 10 times.  If you have to correct, that repetition doesn't count.

HINT:  Start this exercise from only a few feet away from the dog and gradually move further and further out.)

Note:  The down correction:

1.  Slide both hands down the leash to about 6 inches from the collar (as if preparing to
give a sit correction).

2.  Chop hands toward your right toe (at a 45 degree angle from the dog).

3.  The motion should be a swift movement aimed at the ground.  The pressure will be
centered on the dog’s right foreleg, and it should go down easily.

4.  Repeat the above steps until you have 10 downs in a row, with no
corrections.
