Down Correction
NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT THE DOWN CORRECTION IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN INSTRUCTED IN THE 'DOWN'
AND HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE WEEK OF TRAINING THE DOWN COMMAND.
1. Warm your dog up with some heeling and sits.
2. From the sit position, give the dog the 'down' command.
3. Count to 3. If the dog goes down, praise.
4. If the dog doesn’t at least begin to lie down after the three seconds, administer the down correction.*
*Down correction method 1: use the same 'stepping down' motion you used with your left foot to teach the down -
but increase force and speed considerably, which will toss the dog off balance and drop him into the down.
*Down correction method 2: Face your dog's right side from the heel position. Your left foot should be even with
the dog's right front leg, your right foot should be slightly forward. Slide both hands down the leash to about 6
inches from the collar (as if preparing to give a sit correction). Chop hands toward your left toe. The motion should
be a swift movement aimed at the ground.
