Stand Stay
Prerequisites:  All Basic Obedience must be completed before the stand stay

1.  Give your dog the stand command.

2.  Tell your dog to stay & give the hand signal.

3.   Step in front of your dog – but only at a distance of one foot, and at a slight angle.

4.   Hold the position for 10 seconds.

5.   If your dog moves, correct it* and put it back exactly where it was.

6.   Once the dog successfully holds the stay without moving, return to it, praise it, followed directly by the heel
command.

7.   Repeat Steps 1 through 6, increasing the amount of time & distance by one foot and 10 seconds per day.

8.   At the end of 6 days, you should be six feet away and the dog should hold the stand stay for 1 minute.

9.  ONLY when your dog is staying reliably for 1 minute or more should you move further away from the dog.

*Stand stay correction:  Remember, as we are practicing the stand, the dog may try to anticipate your movement.
So instead of rushing back at the dog if it begins to break the stand-stay, simply freeze.  Often, the dog will
self-correct.  If it sits down or moves, simply return to it, replace it into the stand position and walk away again.  DO
NOT REPEAT THE COMMANDS.
