Name Game Recalls
Does your dog REALLY know their name? This exercises is a great way to help teach not only how to respond to their name, but also helps to set your dog up for a solid recall/come command!
Equipment needed - Properly fitted flat buckle collar, 15ft long line, & TREATS!!
Step 1) Place your dog on their 15' long line & Have a good handful of treats/kibble in a pouch or pocket behind you.
Step 2) Find a desolate open space (preferably somewhere that will be easy for your dog to see/find treats on the ground).
Step 3) Tell your dog "get it" & toss a treat out in front of you. You can start by tossing it just a couple feet in front if your dog struggles to find the reward. Once your dog picks up the treat on the ground, call their name, & walk away. The minute your dog starts towards you, mark with a verbal "Yes!" & reward once they catch up to you. Practice for 3-5 minutes, then end the game.
Helpful Tip - If your dog is one to lag or not immediately respond to their name, fret not! You can counter this by speeding up as you turn away from them. Not only will this give them a little less time to wander, but dogs also love to chase things that move quickly!!!
