Recall I
Prerequisites: Distraction Proofing, Leadership, Safety Zone, Sit, Stay, Down
Like with all new skills, be sure you start training in a COLD zone and don't forget to use your Goldilocks Rule .
The short lead recall will be the foundation for all other exercises that enforce the dog’s willingness to come when called.
1. Warm the dog up with your normal heeling and sitting exercises.
2. With the dog in a 'sit', give a WAIT command (not stay) and step to the end of your 6 ft. leash, facing the dog.
3. After a pause, say the dog’s name, then “come” and reel the dog in, hand under hand in your direction.
4. Praise your dog as it comes to you.
5. Give the sit command and praise.
6. Repeat this exercise a MINIMUM of 10 times per practice session – always on the short lead.
7. DO NOT call the dog out of a ‘stay.’ Use the 'wait' command instead.
8. DO NOT call the dog unless you have the leash and can make it come.
Goal: The goal is to be able to simply call the dog, and get the dog to respond so quickly it can beat the reeling action of the leash.
